Bob Stern - actor

Bob Stern was in his thirties when he went on the stage for the first time. It was a small part in the Winston-Salem Little Theatre’s production of the Christopher Fry comedy "The Lady’s Not for Burning." Despite director Doris Pardington’s continual reminder that "there are no small parts, only small actors," Stern recalls his very first entrance to center stage. He froze, along with his only line, "Sire, there is a hubub in the street," or words to that effect. After a decent interval, the leading actor coolly prompted him with "How is it down in the streets?"

Stern played in several other Little Theatre plays, including "The Mousetrap," The Dark at the Top of the Stairs," The Odd Couple" and the musical "Oliver."

At Forsyth Tech he acted in three readers theater productions directed by Jean Cutler. Thirty years later he acted in three other readers theater plays directed by Cutler.

Stern’s roles at the Stained Glass Playhouse were in "Arsenic and Old Lace" and "A Raisin in the Sun" and the musicals "Camelot," "1776" and "Brigadoon." In Raisin he played Karl Lindner, the spokesman for a white neighborhood who tries to pay a black family not to move in. Stern plays the same role in an excerpt from Raisin that is included in "To Be Young, Gifted and Black."

Stern has also written a staged adaptation of "The Nightingale" by Hans Christian Andersen.
